Happy New Year People!
So you’re probably wondering why I’m saying we should all be writers when not all of us know how to shake spears on paper, lol. Here’s the thing, when I say we should all be writers, I mean we should all be able to write out our plans and goals and what we want from a certain project or for a designated time. One thing I’ve come to understand is that I hate to associate with people that don’t have plans, no no no, I’m not saying you should carry the world on your head. Ko make sense na, I’m just saying you should map out a plan so as to have a direction.
Nothing is sexy about people that don’t know what they want.
I understand that the country(Nigeria) we find ourselves in may not exactly favor our plans and that yeah, we’ve been writing down goals for a long time but nothing has really changed, trust me, I understand. I’m in that boat too but the truth remains that, to not have a plan is worse.
Asides the insufficiencies of the country, one other reason why some of us do not get the fulfillment of the things we write down is ojukokoro. You’re living under Ajah bridge and have a job as a sales girl and you’re writing; “this year, I will buy a house by the beach in Rwanda”. Ahhh!!!! Fear God! When it comes to setting goals, it is only wise to set Achievable Goals. Things that if you put in the right amount of work and energy; they will come knocking at your doorstep. Remember, I said “the right amount”. No food for lazy man.
Now that we have gotten that out of the way, here’s one easy approach to setting these goals. I’m guessing you don’t want to be the “Jack of all trades and master of none” this year, right? I thought so too.
First, we must focus on our strengths. If you are a writer, make a list of the things you want to do with your writing, you want to start a blog? Fine! Find your target audience and know how best to sell your story. Want to write a book? Great! Pick a genre, build your characters, build an obstacle for your main character and develop an arc, then start writing. Whatever your strength may be, utilize it. This is not the year to be idle.
Also, you must understand the essence of pro-bono. There are people you need to do things for without charging them. I get that we want monetize our skills so bad, we see people making money out of these things so why should we be the ones doing free stuff? but here’s the gist, these people doing big stuff and rolling with them big dogs also did free jobs, don’t be deceived. There are people that will get you more than what the money you will charge them will get you. They may not come to you, sometimes, you are the one that will have to offer them your services; “this sounds like such an interesting project, I’d love to volunteer my services as a …” it pays off, trust me.
I understand that you need to put food on the table too, that’s why I’m not saying everything has to be for free, you need to understand what you have to do pro-bono and what you must take payment for.
Seeing as the year just started, I really wouldn’t like to choke you with long pieces and although, I know you’d really love to read on, I will have to deprive you that satisfaction and no, I’m not sorry.
P.s – Do not forget to write out those plans and please, do have the best year you can. Love you writer.🤎

"Set achievable goals", It's only important to understand to set goals that are SMART - Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Relevant, Time-bound.
I like the part about focusing on our strength also. Only a monomaniac gets things done.
Thank you for this short but inspiring piece😁🙌
Happy new year to you too
